Presidents Parley [Top]

With summer in full swing and the temperatures nearing 100, our president has the month off and I’m filling in for him on this month’s parley. Recently on vacation myself, I was able to take time from the busy schedule to reflect back on the first half of our term’s year and the progress we as a board have made this year.

The survey that was conducted earlier in the term has set the tone for our year and has provided us focus and guidance for proceeding. Over the past couple of months, the Roofing Committee has been steadily making progress on exploring our options concerning our # 1 issue, the leaking roof. The committee has enlisted the expertise of an architect and has met with a couple of contractors to secure estimates of cost. We will be securing a couple more, but we will soon be looking at our options for repairs vs. funding. We’ve also looked at opportunities for insulation which was another major concern.

In our last board meeting, we started a discussion concerning the condition of our bathrooms. Particularly addressing concerns not only in the survey, but also ones that Ron has been receiving recently. The board took a tour of both the men’s and women’s restrooms and drew up an initial exploratory plan to address the concerns.

Thanks to the good work of Club Pro Hunter and our newest Board Member Kim Schlessinger, we have recently introduced a new social/competitive fall tennis opportunity for the women. The new program addresses a concern about the lack of social/ playing opportunities for women and will be an organized play night orchestrated each week by one of our pros. We will also be posting standings on our TTC website, so they will be easy to check. This looks to be a great opportunity for women to increase their tennis skills and meet new people/ players!

Of course, the men’s program which was enacted this summer has been a huge success. Hunter plans to continue and improve this program through the fall. A tentative start date is September 23.

As you can no doubt perceive, many of our challenges are around facility cost. We’ve been closely monitoring the financial situation, improving processes and attempting to closely monitor costs. We made a tough decision to increase dues, which had not been raised in over 4 years. We took some flack for this but know that we are not only looking to increase our revenue opportunities, but also evaluate and address our expenses when/where we can reign them in and still maintain a quality tennis facility.

Needless to say, it has been an exciting first half of the year! I strongly encourage you to review our board minutes that are always on the wall next to the Pro Shop. They go into greater detail on all of the activities and details above.

Lastly, continuing the tradition of tennis tips, my pointer this month is that practice makes perfect. The service is one of the most difficult and crucial elements of anyone’s game. Toss is central, especially indoors. Keep the toss short and compact. The longer or higher the toss; the more opportunities for it to go off course and derail your serve. Practice by using a point on the wall and toss 25-50 balls at that same spot consistently. This drill will only take you 5 or 10 minutes, but doing this once a week will perfect your toss, allowing you to focus on other points of the service motion or swing.

Cheers,
Mark Koenig, Vice President

September Pro Shop Special
With every string job we will replace your grip. This is a $10 value.

Roofing Committee
The roofing committee is meeting with an architect to discuss the design and planning of the skylight leaking. We will talk about the feasibility and the replacement of the panels and if we can keep the courts leak free in the rainy season. This summer however we will not be doing any panel replacement, only patching, since we do not have enough money to take care of that task. We will be putting away some extra monies so that next summer we can do some sort of replacement and potentially some other improvements as well. We are working hard to take care of this problem, which was our #1 item on our survey and few months ago that you the members wanted fixed.

Adult Sunriver Tennis Camp
Gary still has some openings in his Sunriver Adult tennis camp September 16-19. The session starts at the north courts in Sunriver Thursday around 4pm with a welcome BBQ after the session. We do a morning and afternoon session on Friday and then long morning sessions on Saturday and Sunday. The cost is $209 and that covers you on court instruction, t-shirt and the welcome BBQ. Talk to Gary if you want to sign up or have any questions. This will be our 25th year doing this camp.

Ted Carlson All Comers Tournament
Timberhill Tennis Club will hold its 23rd annual All Comers NTRP tennis tournament. This year we are honoring Ted Carlson for his support of Timberhill over the past 35 years. Ted has served as president and helped TTC in numerous projects. We will offer NTRP rating categories in Men and Women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles. This event is open to any adult or junior players. You do not have to belong to Timberhill to play in this event.

Mission Statement Feedback
The Timberhill Board has developed a draft a mission statement for Timberhill Tennis Club. Please read over and give us any feedback, positive or negative by our next Board meeting to be held September 13.

"Timberhill Tennis Club is a member-owned club whose mission is to provide our members with a superior tennis facility and to maintain a welcoming and friendly community for the enjoyment of social and competitive tennis."

USTA Feedback
We are looking at ways to improve our USTA league play. We need your feedback so please don't hesitate to talk to us about the organizing of teams, play times or any other matters pertaining to the USTA leagues.

Please give any feedback for improving either the adult, mixed doubles, senior or one-doubles league to Gary (gquandt@comcast.net) or Jim Krueger (Jkreuger@proaxis.com).

Fall marketing Campaign
Timberhill will be running a promotion for attracting some new members for the Fall. From September 19 -October 17 Timberhill we be offering a $0 initiation fee. This is a great time to introduce Timberhill to some potential tennis players and get them involved in our great club. Remember that if you sponsor a member then you will receive a free monthly dues when the new member joins. This only pertains to monthly dues paying members that join. You can also bring a prospective member once as a guest for free. Just make sure that you sign their name and write prospective member next to their name.

Courts #4-6 Closed August 30-September 5
We will be resurfacing courts #4-6 starting Monday August 30 and they will be closed until September 5 or 6 depending on the weather. They will be cleaning, addressing the couple of small cracks and putting down three coats of the color surface and then repaint the lines. The courts will be in tiptop shape for this upcoming year. So remember during that period to only reserve courts 1-3 or 7 & 8.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hunter's Ad
As the summer ends, we look back on a really successful season of tennis for TTC. We hosted four adult and junior tournaments this summer, and the annual BBQ was a hit once again, and many players represented the club during weekly play on the courts of Corvallis, in tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest, and in national competitions around the country. We had great successes from our USTA adult league teams, as well as from the 2 + 1 league team format.

Many players took advantage of the lesson program this summer, increasing and improving our community's pool of players.

During September, our focus will be gearing up for fall. New programs were initiated, including a weekly Men's League, and we are adding a weekly Women's League beginning at the end of this month. These leagues require pre-signups, so call Hunter if you would like to be a part of either this fall, as a regular or a sub.

Also this fall, we will continue with the new format for Junior Fests, as well as Quickstart rallyball for the younger kids and team tennis for the more advanced players. Friday rookie leagues have been a great way for kids to develop match experience and gain confidence to try tournaments, and that will continue on a monthly basis as well.

Our Ted Carlson All-Comer's Classic, held October 9-11, will highlight our fall membership drive.

On the instructional side of things, the fall junior and adult clinic programs will start soon: you can call the club, visit the website, or stop by for registration information. A free "stroke of the week" clinic will be offered during select weeks through the fall and winter--check the web site or lobby for dates and times.

Continuing this fall is TTC's participation in the Tennis Welcome Center program. We are offering introductory level classes with drills and match play for new and returning players. If you have neighbors or co-workers who have always wanted to try tennis, this will be a great opportunity.

Have a great end to the summer!!
