Presidents Parley [Top]

I want to thank everyone who participated in the recent survey of the membership. The response was overwhelming and gratifying. Mark Koenig who is in charge of the survey will give a complete summary of the outcome in this newsletter. The results of the survey help us to prioritize our future financial outlays and to plan club events.

Most of the May meeting was taken up in discussing the survey, its meaning and the implications for our future. We will try to address the desires of the members within our own budgetary constraints. For example, the leaks in the roof were considered by far the most critical problem and we are now exploring the options and costs of rectifying this persistent problem.

We also would like a mission statement for the club. At the moment we do not have one. We on the board would be grateful for any input or possible mission statements you might have. Please give this some thought, write down any ideas you may have and leave them with our manager, Gary Quandt.

The myth of the "sweet spot" is still current, I see, but I also have noticed that more attention is being given to the frame shots and the net crawlers. A squarely hit shot usually comes roaring back at you, frame shots rarely do. Another thing that is often overlooked is the fact that frame shots do not wear out your strings. String jobs are expensive. It is therefore both fiscally prudent and advantageous tennis wise to develop those mishits. Work on them.

Junior Pre-tournament Camp
Gary will be having his annual Pre-Tournament camp for Challenger level junior players. The camp will start Sunday July 11 at 1:30pm - 4:00pm and then Monday and Tuesday June 12-13 9:30am - 12:00pm and then 1:30pm - 4:00pm with a lunch provided those two days. That will be followed by the Pacific Western Junior Challenger Tournametnt June 14-15. This is a great way to get ready for the tournament and work on your game in a fun environment. Call Gary at the club for more info.

Timberhill Birthday BBQ
Sunday July 11 starting at 4:00pm we will have our 38th annual birthday BBQ at Timberhill. As usual we will have the world famous Roy Burnham's BBQ chicken provided by Timberhill. We will have a potluck sign-up to bring appetizers, salads, desserts and some bread to the BBQ. This is our biggest (and best food) social event of the year. We usually have over 100 members and their families coming to join in our celebration, so put this date on your calendar and look for the sign-up sheets in the clubhouse. Tennis will be played on a casual basis as there will be no organized tennis, just open courts to play with someone you may not know. We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up, clean up and take down tables, etc, so if you can give some help contact Gary at the club or John Myers our social committee chair.

Court Care - Gum
Please keep Timberhill tennis courts clean. We have seen lot's more gum on the court the past six months as well as reports of people spitting on the court. To keep the courts clean we ask that you do not chew gum, bring any drinks (coffee, soda, etc) except for water on the court with you. Spillage with beverages cause a problem so thank you for helping keep foreign substances off the courts.

MEN'S NIGHT UPDATE
Thursday's men's nights will become Men's League this summer from June 24-August 26. It will no longer be a drop-in program, but a structured doubles league that will guarantee play all night when you sign up. We'll run three courts of doubles, with each player on a court partnering with each other player for a total of 3 sets. We'll tally the number of games each player wins every week, and the top scorers will rotate up a court, with lower scorers rotating down, creating new foursomes for the next week's play. A running total will be kept, and the player with the most number of games at the end of the League period wins. We'll need 12 regular players and a list of subs to call on to get the league underway, and any level player is welcome. A staff member will be present to kick off the action each night. Look for signups in the lobby. Tuesday night Men's Nights will remain a drop-in program for those who wish to take advantage of a more flexible format. Call Hunter if you want to sign up or have any questions about Men's League.

Roofing Committee
Based on the feedback from the TTC survey the Board has formed a roofing committee to look at different possibilities of getting a better handle on the roof skylight leaks. The committee consists of Ken Lefton, Jim Fisher and John Wallin. We will be meeting with the roofer to go over the options we have within our budget and see if we can't come up with a good solution to this ongoing problem.

Hunter's Ad
This summer, the teaching staff has expanded the menu of offerings for adult player development classes and lessons. We've taken our more successful programs from the past, and included new ideas and classes to provide our membership a comprehensive tennis educational experience. We hope you take advantage of some of these options, as we feel there is truly something for everyone. Also, look for a more structured "league"-type Men's Night on Thursdays this summer. We've got a Women's League in the works, as well. Hope to see you out on the courts!

Team Practices
We run these in a variety of ways, but the most effective way we've found is to isolate it by singles and doubles. Time/Date: Set by the pro and the team

Singles--$16/player for 3, $12/player for 4

" Two 30 minute private lessons, spaced two weeks apart, will allow us to work on areas of concern.
" A practice portfolio will be provided to help you track your progression.
" Two passes to Courtside Conditioning will help get you into better match shape.
" A stroke analysis DVD will be sent after the last lesson that compares elements of your shots to those of top-ranked pros.

Mixed Doubles
This class will focus on the fine art of Mixed Doubles.
