At the board meeting Dec 10 we welcomed four new members - Melissa Pohl, Bob Rice, Werner Evans and Randy Willard. Returning members are Cherrill Boissonou, Russ Youmans, Bob Custer, Jeff Draglia and me. At the January meeting we will be choosing officers and making committee appointments. I would like to thank those who have completed their two years on the board - Toni Thomas, Jim White and Marge Wright (who served three years). Also, thanks to Darlene Topping, who accepted an appointment to the board, but who was unable to attend meetings because of an extension to Ray's stay in London.
See you on the courts,
Wayne Phillips, TTC President
IT'S ABOUT HAVING FUN
Tennis is certainly more enjoyable as you improve. What makes tennis fun is
many things, but none is more important that the learning of it. To do what
you couldn't do before gives you a feeling of accomplishment. Winning and losing
may seem the primary reason to play, but improvement is of much greater consequence.
Another reason to play is for your health. Chasing and hitting a ball is childlike
behavior that may be what's needed to keep you thinking and feeling young. Exercise
is the solution to physical (and mental) problems, and tennis is a great source
of it.
Tennis is so complex that even if you start winning tournaments your feeling
of mastery will only be temporary. And what a wonderful thing that is--to pursue
a hobby that never can be mastered. Imagine: You'll never get bored!
With measures of persistence, practice and good humor, over time we develop a style we call our own. Now is when we begin to have some real fun with tennis--when we can play the game with feeling, when we can improvise, actually think when competing, applying our skills in a personal way.
SKYLIGHTS LEAKING OVER COURTS #1-3
Just to give you an update where we are with this issue. We have contracted
with Stutzman & Kropf to get up and patch the skylights and they are figuring
out a security system for their workers to use to be safe when they get up on
the roof. They are meeting with OHSA (governmental agency) to figure out a way
they can get up on the roof to patch the skylights. We have decided that using
a asphalt tape will be the best patching material. It is easy to put down, adheres
well and is easy to take off when we replace the skylights this summer. Again,
we thank the membership for it's patience in this matter. If you have any questions
or comments please direct them to Gary.
2008 MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
The 2008 TTC Membership Directory will be out and available to members by Jan.
7, 2008. Each membership receives one free directory. If you need to take another
for the office or wherever extra copies will be $1. You can pick up the directories
in the TTC clubhouse and just sign-up on the sheet if you take an extra.
NEW YORK NEW YEAR'S PARTY
We will have a unique New Years Eve party this year. We are having a New York
New Year's Eve party. The plan is to start the event at 6:30pm and have snacks,
desserts and BYOB if you want. We will watch the Time Square ball drop at 9:00pm
and bring in the New Year at 9:00 instead of 12:00pm. The activities will end
around 9:30pm and you may stay and continue to play, go to another New Year's
Eve Party or go home and sleep off the party. There will be some organized tennis
as well as camaraderie, fun and lots of food and drink. Look for a sigh-up sheet
in the clubhouse.
Put this great new activity on your calendar.
DEC. 31 MONDAY NIGHT FROM 6:30-9:30PM!!
JOHN & PHIL'S TOURNAMENT
Put January 18-20 on your calendar as TTC will be hosting the annual John &
Phil's tennis tournament. We offer senior events and also open. Thanks to the
support of John & Phil's Toyota/Subaru our open division draws top players
form around the Pacific Northwest and beyond, getting the top player from Southern
California, players from the east coast as well as some college teams send some
players. This is the best tennis that you can see in Corvallis and we encourage
all members to come see some great tennis during the tournament.
THANKS TO OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS
I would like to thank the outgoing TTC Board mebers for their time and effort
in making TTC the great club that it is. President Wayne Phillips highlighted
much of our activity in last month's newsletter and he will stay one more year
as Past-President. We will miss Marge Wright who has served the last three years
as President and Past President and very active on the Human Resource committee
and the social committee. Toni Thomas helped with the junior committee and Jim
White helped on the membership and adult activities committees. All of your
generosity of time and work will be missed and TTC thanks you for your service.
It's members like you all that make Timberhill such a fun lace to come and enjoy
the great sport of tennis.
Happy New Year!
League season is just around the corner. Aside from our ongoing lessons, adult
clinics and Tennis Welcome Centers, Becky and I are also available to run USA
League team practices. We can customize these practices to work on whatever
skills you'd like your team to improve upon.
The John & Phil's Toyota Championships will be held here at the club January
18-20. Even if you're not in the draw, this is a great spectator event, traditionally
showcasing ex touring pros, teaching pros from the area clubs, college players
and top juniors form around the Northwest. We look forward to seeing your there.
On the junior end of things, the new clinic session begins Jan. 8, and the
upcoming Junior Fest is Jan. 11Prior to this junior fest, at 6pm on the 11th,
is our annual Junior Tournament information meeting. If you're new to the junior
tournament scene or just want more information on how to get involved, this
is a great opportunity to ask questions about the process. New to junior Fest
this year will be the addition of "Friday Night Lights", a drop-in
team tennis competition that will run concurrently with Junior Fest. Players
must be her by 6:30pm on that Friday, and can sign up ahead of time (the week
of the event, on the entry door to court 6) to save their spot on a team. Players
should be in the middle school or high school, or have tournament experience.
Also, save the date of Saturday Feb. 2 for the Adult/Junior Challenge. This
has been a popular yearly event, teaming juniors with Adults for a doubles tournament.
There are three flights based on team ability level and the junior's age, and
each flight is completed in less than three hours. Find your partner and sign
up in the lobby soon.
