Presidents Parley | From the Manager | Hunter's Lair | Results | New Members | Last Month's News
My name is Ronald (Ron) Guenther and I have just been elected your president. I joined the club in 2006 after a break in playing tennis of twenty-six years. I know about ten percent of the members by name and about another ten percent by sight so I feel that I should introduce myself.
I played tennis for North Bend HIgh School, and then played for Oregon State University when it still had a tennis team. I won my numerals as a freshman and then lettered the next three years.
In 1978, I played on the tennis team of the Hahn Meitner Institut in Berlin. We won our league. At that point, I did not pick up a racquet for twenty six years since I was busy raising my family. Now I am playing again. I love the game, and play every chance I get. Although the members serving on the board are excellent, it is obvious to me, that we need more members willing to serve on the board-- long time members who will provide a sense of continuity, and women, who will broaden the perspective of the board. Currently, there is only one woman serving on a board of nine members.
The first meeting of the new board was taken up with the election of officers, a review of the finances, and a general overview of the club and its objectives. No new policies were proposed. Gary Quandt will list the new officers.
I would very much appreciate receiving any ideas or proposals from the membership, concerning the club and how we could improve the way we do things. If you have questions, I will also try to answer them. I look forward to doing the best that I can for you in the coming year.

2010 Board of Directors
Timberhill has a new Board of Directors for 2010. The elected officers are President
Ron Guenther, Vice President Mark Koenig, Treasurer Steven Kearsley and Secretary
Clay Higgins. Other directors at large are Heidi Igarashi, Jim Kreuger, Stan
Sevruk, Ken Lefton and John Myers. Thanks to the Board for volunteering their
time to help the club run smoothly and keep Timberhill one of the finest facilities
in the Oregon and a great value to it's members.
Locker Policy
Timberhill changed its locker policy last month and now provide members with
locks to put on their lockers. We will not be charging for that service, so
if you will want a locker, just contact Gary and he will issue you a locker.
Timberhill will still have access to your locker for security and liability
issues but you will not be charged a rental fee. You may still bring your own
lock for your playtime and lock up your stuff during your court time and take
the lock off when you leave. If you have any questions, please let Gary know.
2010 TTC Directory
The 20101 Timberhill Membership Directory is now ready to pick in the TTC clubhouse.
Every membership receives one free directory. If you want an extra just let
Gary know how many you take so he can charge accordingly. If you have anything
listed that has changed or did not get updated, please let Gary know so he can
update your member information.
USTA Adult League
Starting the middle of February until the end of May the Adult USTA league will
be very active on the weekends. The afternoon times will start to be much harder
to get. They use 5 courts per match and sometimes have multiple matches per
day. So the if you want to play on the weekends and late afternoon times will
be much easier to reserve.
Landscape Committee
Timberhill will be forming a Landscape Committee to help oversee the maintenance
and long term care of Timberhill's landscape areas. Currently we have Corinne
Butzin and Al Haunold on the committee and we are looking for a few more members
who are interested in keeping our club looking great. Please contact Gary, Corinne
or Al if you are interested.
Adult/Junior Challenge
Saturday Jan. 30 Timberhill will be hosting it's 8th annual Adult/Junior Challenge
event. This pits one adult and one junior against another adult/junior combination.
There are three different skill levels.
GOLD from 1:00pm - 3:15pm
SILVER from 10:45am - 12:45pm
Bronze 3:30pm - 5:15pm
You can sign up with a partner, without a partner or call Hunter and he can
partner you up with someone else. The cost is $5 per person and there will be
food after each division. Look for the sign-up sheet on the door in the clubhouse.
Call Hunter with any questions.
Super Tiebreaker Social
We will be hosting our second annual Super-Tiebreaker social on Saturday Feb.
6 starting at 3:00pm until about 8:00pm with a light dinner at the end of the
event. The Supertiebreaker is what USTA and many tournaments are using in place
of the third set in matches, so it is important that we practice this format,
since it is like playing a third set. The match hinges on your ability to be
relaxed and play to win during the super tiebreaker. This gives you an opportunity
to practice this in a semi-competitive atmosphere. You can sign up as a doubles
team or a single and we will get you teamed with someone. This would be great
for USTA League players or any other club member who wants to practice a competitive
format in a social atmosphere. Look for sign-up sheet on the round table in
the clubhouse.
Coaching Spots Open
Corvallis High School girls' tennis program is seeking a responsible, motivated
volunteer to coach the junior varsity (JV) portion of the team. Enthusiasm for
the sport and ability to work with student athletes is more important than tennis
ability for this position. The high school season runs from February 22 to the
first week in May. Practice runs for an hour and a half (3:30-5pm OR 5-6:30pm
alternating weeks) Monday through Friday (less on rainy days) at CHS, and time
commitment on match days is a little more. Matches for JV are pro sets (first
to 8 games) and are "exhibition matches" (team results are not tabulated).
There are no weekend commitments, except a single day Saturday JV district tournament
held at the end of the season. The applicant must be 21, and would work closely
with current varsity coach, Andy Hackethorn. Filling this position allows girls'
tennis to remain a no-cut sport at CHS, which is great for both the school and
the Corvallis tennis community. This could be a joint position if two people
can fill the time requirements, so please inquire even if your schedule is limiting.
Anyone with serious interest in the position should contact Andy at (541) 753-5321
(anytime).
Also South Albany High school has an opening for both the Boy's and Girl's Tennis
coach position. If you are interested in either job call Steve Pennsinger at
541-967-4522.
January was a month of transition for our staff, as we said goodbye to Becky Correll after almost 3 years of service to Timberhill as Assistant Pro. It's a busy time of year around here, but I've tried to fill in the gaps left behind while at the same time conduct a job search for a new Pro. We're getting closer to the beginning of spring, and that means preparations for USTA League tennis and high school teams have already begun. I am currently helping a couple of USTA League teams with practices--give me a call if your team is interested in this. Our Friday junior offerings this month include Rookie League on the 19th, and Quickstart Rallyball (beginners aged 5-12) on the 26thth followed by Junior Team Tennis (intermediate and advanced players--middle school and high school) later in the evening on the 26th. These programs offer play opportunities for everyone at all levels--even beginning kids. A final note, that the Tennis Welcome Center classes continue through the spring: these have been a real success--again, if you have friends or family looking to start tennis, this is a great introduction. Let's create more players together to keep our tennis community vibrant!!
Upcoming Friday night Junior events
Rallyball/Junior Team Tennis 6:30 - 9:00pm;Feb. 26 and April 16
Rookie League 6:30 - 7:45pm; Feb. 19, March 5, April 9, May 7

There are lots of ways to find other players as well as joining up to play in
many of our programs. If you really get desperate for players you can always
call or email Gary and he can help you out as well.
Martin & Cecilia Meehan 754-7361: Both are 2.5 players that will play with their juniors max (12) and Margot(12) who play at the Rookie level. They have some flexibility in their schedules.
