Where the Money Goes

Since board passed the 2003-2004 budget last meeting and we were all thinking about finances, I thought a column on this subject might be of interest. Of course the club's financial statement is posted monthly outside the pro shop for anyone to look at, but it can be a bit obscure, so here are some highlights.

The major decision we made was not to increase dues this year. We know everyone has a tight budget because of the weak economy. To cover slightly increased expenses we increased the expected membership by two (from 218 to 220). Everyone can help here by talking up the club and being on the lookout for new members.

Dues account for 91% of the club's $18,200/mo. income, so keeping membership up is essential. The second biggest chunk of income is from Hunter's lessons. The club gets 20% of lesson income which contributes 6.5% of the club income. The remaining 2.5% comes in small bits from 10-12 other sources such as the ball machine, guest fees, tournaments, etc.

The money outflow is more complicated - there are dozens of categories. The single biggest, 23.8% of our monthly expenses, is our mortgage payment. We currently owe $420,000 on a 7% commercial loan which was refinanced last year to take advantage of lower commercial rates. Anyone with an extra couple hundred grand they'd like to donate to a great nonprofit :)? Other major expenses are: 22.2% for personnel payroll (Gary and Hunter), 9.6% for health insurance, 9.1% for utilities (mainly lights), 6.6% for property taxes, 5.5 % for major maintenance (e.g. the parking lot resurface and new carpet), and 3.8% for day-to-day maintenance (e.g. leak repair). The other 20% goes to smaller items like telephone, office supplies, landscaping, kitchen and bathroom supplies, etc.

A big concern for the board is the exploding cost of health insurance. It is currently the third largest expense item. There doesn't seem to be much we can do about that other than complain to our congresspersons (There is no reason health costs should be going up 2 to 3 times the inflation rate). You should also note number 4, utilities, namely lights. If you know the court is usually not used after you play, turn out the lights!
