Open Courts Time

Just a few words in support of the open court times at Timberhill: Men's Nights (Tue/Thu), Women's Night (Mon), Junior's Night, and Mixed Doubles (Sun). If you're a long-time member and never attend one of these, why not give it a try occasionally. New members often come at these times to get to know other members, and of course for them it's a chance to play when you don't belong to a regular group. If there are not enough people to play, however, new members can get discouraged. This has been especially a problem with Women's Night. Many nights only a few come, get discouraged and don't come back. Remember that keeping new members is the lifeblood of our club? I've been a regular at Men's Nights and Mixed Doubles for the whole four years I've been a member, even though I play regularly with several other groups. I think the adjustment of playing people with different styles has really helped my USTA play.

I know, sometimes you get matched up with a weak player, or are playing against a weak team. It still can be fun. It can be a chance to work on your weak shots, the ones you don't usually try in more competitive play. And if you are playing against a team with one strong and one weak player, don't go for the easy winners against the weaker player all the time, but try to make points against the stronger player.

You'll see elsewhere in the newsletter we are making a couple of changes. Women's Night is becoming Open Mixed to see if we can get it regenerated. Junior's Night is becoming Junior's-Family Night, since some parents would like to come and play with their kids.

Hope to see you during some of the open times.

Gary Watson (co-president)

TIMBERHILL SILENT AUCTION (1ST ANNUAL)
Timberhill will be having its 1st annual silent auction to raise some funds earmarked for locker room upgrades. Items for bid consist of two Sunriver weekend homes, one Sun Valley home, a wine tasting party for 40 on the Willamette river, a brunch & tennis at the club for couples, an original work of art by a local artist, special flower arrangements, 1 hour tennis lesson, a new tennis racquet and more. The items will be in the Timberhill clubhouse to bid on starting November 1. Bid closing will take place at the Nov. 9 Spaghetti Feed 4:00-8:00pm at the Timberhill clubhouse. There will be a sign-up sheet to attend the Spaghetti feed so look for it in the clubhouse.

DROP-IN PROGRAMS CHANGE

The Board has made a few minor adjustments to two of Timberhill's drop-in programs. The Tuesday and Thursday men's night and the Sunday Mixed doubles program will remain as is with no changes. What used to be Monday night Women's night has been changed to an Adult Open Mixer at 7:45pm. It is open to men and women alike with the emphasis being put on mixed doubles depending on who comes out. We are trying to get more players out on Monday night so we will experiment with this format for three months or so and reevaluate the Monday night program. The junior night (not Junior Fest) will be changed to a Junior Family night. We are encouraging parents to drop by and play on Friday nights with the juniors at Friday night. We hope this encourages a wider range of ages on Friday nights to participate. Remember that you must be a member to come to Friday Junior Family night. Non-members are allowed to come to the once a month Junior Fests.

TTC ANNUAL MEETING NOVEMBER 17 AT 7:30PM AT THE CLUBHOUSE

Timberhill will be hosting its annual meeting on Monday November 17th at 7:30pm in the TTC clubhouse. You will vote on new Board members, hear the state of the club address, look over the year-end financial statement, have refreshments, door prizes and learn more about the club. This is your time to bring up any questions or concerns or just sound off on how you feel about the club to the Board of Directors.

Hello, and welcome to fall! There is lots of great tennis on tap for the month of November at Timberhill and beyond hopefully there will be something for everyone.

Our Spaghetti Feed event is November 9 at 4:00pm. This was a great time last year--a good crowd enjoying plenty of food and tennis. An added feature this year is the Silent Auction you've read about elsewhere in the newsletter. November 7 will be the next Junior Fest.

Elsewhere in the Northwest, the USTA Pro Circuit Tournament will be held November 9-16 at Eugene Swim and Tennis Club, and the Men's Pro Superset event will be at the Rose Garden November 22. Good attendance of these events will ensure that world class tennis will return in the future.

On the home front, the second fall session of Junior Clinics are underway--there are still some spots open, so ask if you're interested. The adult clinics and ladder are happening--if you're not involved, but would like to be, call me at the club. Lastly, we've had some parents interested in participating in the Junior Nights on Fridays. We think this is a great idea and would love to have more parents playing with the kids on Fridays. Have a good month, and see you on the courts.
