Developing the Will to Win

September 2002

The aspiring player must learn to believe in himself. The person who is positive believes that after making a mistake his next shot will be great. The negative person isn't so sure. I overheard Hunter giving a group lesson to a group of adults and Hunter had the students give him feedback on their strokes and shots. The person who is completely positive will only respond when they hit the ball well. The extremely negative person will comment only when they hit the ball badly. It's a great example to make the negative student realize that he's being negative. It is then possible to help him change. This evolves into a drill called "GOOD" where every time the student hits the ball well, he responds by saying "Good."
Complimenting yourself is the simplest and most important form of reward. Do it more often!!
