It helps to know what you're trying to do out there. It gives you a definite goal to play for. You learn and improve faster. In a match it gives you piece of mind. It makes you a more positive player.
When rallying from the baseline realize your limitations. First, you are too far from the net to do any harm to anyone; you don't have enough angle to work with. Secondly, because of the deep court position you must take precaution against sending a short ball to your opponent. Thirdly, when you hit down the line you risk hitting the higher part of the net; also the court is shorter here, and it is more difficult to cover the return. Finally, in this playing situation you are limited because points are lost - not won.
So, your strategy is one of the greatest simplicity: hit it deep and cross-court. Sounds boring, huh? A player as talented as you limited to such simple-minded tactics?
It's this simplicity which makes you a better player - a steadier player. With fewer choices you won't miss so many balls trying to make up your mind what to do. It gives you an inner calm, a piece of mind that makes what you do, do better. Got it?
When you play the ball from behind the baseline you are in a defensive situation. When you play the ball from inside the baseline you have potential to be offensive. And when you play the ball from near the service line or closer you have to be offensive.
Trying to make their shots too good from the baseline is many players' downfall. They consider themselves aggressive players, but they don't know when to turn it off. It's this lack of restraint that causes many unforced errors.
Develop your patience. At the baseline simplify your tactics: hit high over the net and cross-court. The only exception to hitting cross-court is if your opponent has a very strong forehand or a very weak backhand. If they fall into that category stay away from the strong forehand and hit your shots towards a weak backhand. Force the other guy into trying something stupid. Keep hitting deep and cross-court. Make every shot land behind the service line. Stay cool and calm until he hits short .... Then take that short ball and hit it down the line. Hit it deep with underspin. Follow it into the net. Split stop. Now be aggressive!
